Re: [RC] Purina Strategy - sharp penny

I just top dress it in Reno's feed a week prior to a ride
so his gut can get used to it. It's one of the few things
Reno will eat at a ride and this is a horse that is the
equilivent of an equine garbage disposal at home....he will
eat any thing at home but get him to a ride and it's a
whole 'nother story....sigh. I don't feed it all the time
as it is rather pricey at $11/bag. For home I use a local
feed mill that makes a very nice 10% protein feed with 8%
fat that runs $5.50/bag.

Penny (in NE Tx)

For those of you who are feeding Purina Strategy - how
much is it costing you per bag? How much do you feed?

We fed Purina Strategy during XP2001, as it was a feed we
could buy at any
Purina dealer, which we found easy enough when we
traveled. Horses seemed to
like it. Because it is in those small pellets, it also
makes a nice mash
when wet. We fed it daily for the time the horses were on
the XP, but
because that was unusual circumstances, I can not tell
you much more on how
the horses did. They ate it (and would often not eat
other feeds) and seemed
to hold weight well enough, and have a good attitude and
energy level.

I am starting to feed it now , but I am not much on daily
grain and
supplements as long as I have good pasture or hay, so
could not give you any
"educated information" on the product. Because we are
getting ready to the
Bryce XP, I just want to get the horses started on eating
it, as I will feed
it at the ride, and mix some in the beet pulp mash for
traveling to
encourage them to eat more on the road. Sorry I was not
much help. I am sure
there are a few using this feed with their endurance
horses on a more
consistent basis, that can give better opinions on how
well it feeds.
