Some people just do not get it even after being
told many times.
I had a person call up to enter his horse in a 25
LD. It was obvious from his questions that he was clueless, and he even
said that his horse was "bottomless". I suggested very strongly that he
should enter the 25 LD which started a half hour later and used the same
trail. I offered to pair him up with an experienced mentor (one of the
joys of CTR and often results in a ribbon for a newbie). He
refused
"It would be to slow" I later found that a
mutual friend had given him the same advice.
At the half way check, Ol' Bottomless was obviously
being overridden but still "fit to continue". I again told him to slow
down, and the vet told him that she would pull him if he did not promise to slow
down. 45 minutes later he was off in a cloud of dust. He barely made
pulse criteria in time, and did not get the completion from a combination of
gait and exhaustion. He left swearing at that "girl" (the vet) for pulling
him. I'll bet he will never be back.
Moral: Some people refuse to learn the easy
way.
