Re: [RC] [RC] [Guest] Longreach saddle-question - Laurie DurginNot sure eactly if this is the answer, but there is only one flap. The billets go into a "pocket" under the flap only as wide as the billets. They come down from the tree between the panesl and the saddle seat from what I can see. The seat is also more secure/deeper than the picture looks. It looked kind of shallow to me , but it isn't , it is nicely rounder and deep enough to be secure. Not as narrow as alot of english saddles. I like it cause I like the closer contact/ freedom of english saddles, but I like the securty of western. Plus I was tired of the weight of western saddles. And My horse was shortbacked . An 18" Aussie /16 western was only 22.5 inches front to back.If you get it and want their leathers, upgrade them /mine came with the "Kimbertly" series and the leather is not the same quality as the saddle. Plus they are harder to change leangth on ,buckly in inside and thru pockets. I perferred the english leathers(I also put eay ride stirrups on the wintect webbers, so they were more free swinging and I could get lmky feet under me more.. It was 980$ at the time I got it, but I got a "scratch and dent" sale price of 575$.Poleys are also different size and postion than a normal aussie. No problem with them interferirng with posting, 2pt. etc. They have saved me on a couple spins though! Rather wack my thighs than my stomach!(you want about 1.5-2" inches fo space from thigh to poley). Flaps also are not as long as a lot of Aussie 'pads"So I customized my pads by cutting them off about 4' My flap/pad length is 22.5 x 38 and I add a few inches . Oh. and I also cut off about 4'' of billets straps, as they were so long I could have had the ends almost touch on his belly.! They tell you to use a thick pad, I rode him 4 hours with just a tacky tack, and he was a touch sensitive, the vet said just use a thicker pad. I was going to get one with inserts, but heck ,I just cut up a western cushion pad made of closed cell foam and velcroed it to the panels, so I can still use my tacky tack at home on shorter rides or even with the coolback. You can get sheepskin pads for them , I'd like too eventually.
