[RC] changed hoof angles - Michelle Fink

Hi -

My Arab has been shod at about 51 deg. for the last couple of years. My
farrier moved this summer, and the farrier I am now using follows Ovnicek's
method. He put shoes on my mare yesterday, and he set them back slightly
and rounded off her toes, which made the hoof angle about 54 deg. He thinks
her toes were 'running forward' (they do grow more forward than down). The
work *looks* good - nice short toes and the heels look strong - but it's a
different hoof conformation than before. Should she should be layed off for
a short while due to the change? Does setting the toe back carry any risk
of bruising/soreness under the tip of the coffin bone? Do tendons/ligaments
need time to adjust to this angle change?

Happy Trails -
