[RC] [Guest] HELP! Need info on severe bowed tendon - Ridecamp Moderator

Jacque Muessig jessamwin@xxxxxxx
I need some experienced advice on a bowed tendon which was quite severe, done just by running in the pasture. This was done 3 months ago. Did the poultice, stall rest, and 2 ultrasounds. As of yesterday, the 6 year old horse is walking on the leg (front leg tendon), but does not bear weight on it when grazing or standing. It is still quite large, and the ultrasound yesterday revealed there is a pocket of fluid in the lower fetlock and just above. The young vet who examined him both times, hasnt given me any other options of what I could be doing. He is suggesting tendon splitting, and annular ligament splitting. From what research I have been doing, I am concluding that this surgery is NOT a good idea. I have read the bood "THE BOWED TENDON" by Tom Ivers already. My question is, after 3 months with a severe bow, is the horse still not bearing weight and should there be pockets of fluid still there. I have been also told that wrapping and cold water treatments at this stage would not be beneficial to healing it. Can ANYONE with any knowledge of this or experience help or advice me on this one. Is the surgery beneficial? Appreciate any help you can give me. email me Please at jessamwin@xxxxxxxx or I will keep checking Ridecamp for answers. Thanks folks.
