Re: [RC] Travel Route from Knox Tn to Helena MT - Barbara McCraryMy daughter, son-in-law and I each bought horses from a ranch in east-central MT within the past 1-1/2 years. We had them shipped by private horse transport and all arrived in good shape, except for slight dehydration. The horses had refused to drink, as ours always do when we take them to a ride. The transporters did one layover on the way, but otherwise drove straight through. It cost us $500 per horse. Since these horses were born, raised and trained on the prairies, their biggest shock was 150-foot tall redwood trees, forests in general, and steep trails. It took a lot of walking up steep mountains to build muscle, but the forests still confuse my horse a little. Patches of intense light on the forest floor, sunlight filtering down through the trees, startle him. But other wise he is adapting nicely. Next question. Travel mapper shows the trip to be 2033 miles one way. First off - in the event I get this horse there is NO WAY I will let him be shipped. My plan would be to haul butt out there drive / sleep etc. Spend a few days there with him getting use to him etc. Then come back using the same method I did going to the NC. Drive no more then 6 to 7 hrs per day - stop at a place with a turn out what ever - plan on staying over a day half way back. Ride him some when I can. Try to make the trip back as easy and enjoyable as I can. He has been hauled many time - not a green traveler or camper. The mapper program shows going through Chicago- uhmm no way I will do that The rest of the rout shows going up to SD then across to MT. Looks like the best route. Just have to do a work around of Chicago This adventure could be happening next month. If this happens I will be looking for stop over places on the way back. I have the time to do this right. So any input?
