[RC] ATVs, Horses and Mud - Lysane CreeI think if there is enough mud for a horse to get stuck in, chances are the ATV will spin its tires too. We have had lots of mud around here (Quebec) on the trails this spring and I have ridden (at a walk, of course) through mud where the horses were almost knee deep. It was the looser kind of mud, and they had no problem picking their way through. Somes ATVs are pretty powerful and would probably get through but you'd have to do the old "give it all you got and don't stop" routine. If the mud is deep or firm enough to get up under the frame of the bike (which is not that high off of the ground), I'm sure the bike would get stuck before the horse. After measuring out some trail recently with an ATV, I said at the end of the afternoon "And this is why horses are much better than ATVs". The horses have never had problems going up and down the hills on the trail and crossing ditches and creeks with muddy banks, but with the ATV some of those small hills are steep enough that the bike could tip over or get stuck. So I vote for your horse getting you through the mud. When in doubt, sit still and give them their head a bit more and they will pick there way through.
