Re: [RC] Pony Express on NPR - DreamWeaverSuch things as express station raids and indian attacks ment some times a rider and horse had to keep going. I believe the longest ride ended up being over 300 miles, atleast most of that on the same horse (the one the rider was on when he got to the first raided station). In the August EN there is a whole page about the history of the Cold Springs Pony Express Station. The longest ride was made by Pony Bob Haslam - 380 miles, the longest on record (he did take a 9 hour break between the two 190 mile sections). He is also famous for riding 120 miles in eight hours and 20 minutes, while wounded. He was carrying Lincoln's Inaugural Address. Local history has it that when the Indians raided some of the XP stations (XP was the brand that was put on the horses), that the horses got loose and their descendents are still running wild in Nevada today! Happy Trails, Karen in NV P.S. endurance truck: 2003 Ford F450, 6.0 Diesel, Supercab, Flatbed, still has less mileage than the horses so dunno mpg yet but first long trip hauling 23k# (combined weight) was 12.5 mpg. AWESOME truck! (and, I know it'd prolly get better mileage if I wasn't having so much fun cruising up the grades at the speed limit with a full load <g>) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= http://www.endurance.net/ads/seabiscuit.html Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
