Re: [RC] ATV = horse? - Heidi SmithIs there anywhere an ATV can go that a horse could not? There are some tracks and "winter roads" in northern Alberta that are described as "ATV-only" that might be lovely to ride. I don't mean legally rideable, I mean practically and technically rideable. I can think of only two instances that might qualify--one being snow trails groomed for snowmobiles, where ATVs get by nicely but horses sink in, and the other being a few specific sorts of boulder fields where a wide-tired ATV can be carefully maneuvered through but a horse might get a leg between the boulders. (I navigated one like this once in a 4wd Bronco in low gear, low range, rather than drive 60 or so miles back out the way I had come--literally had to plan to get a tire on this rock, turn, get a tire on that rock, etc. And needless to say, that trail flunked as a potential route for the ride I was scouting trail for at the time... My dad was with me, and it was his rig--we walked the thing first, and planned it out, and then he said, "I'll keep walking on ahead, you go back and get the Bronco and drive it through. I don't even want to watch!")
