[RC] rectum retention? - Kari HanesI don't know how to explain this one and stay politically correct...so here goes.My daughter took my mare to the 4-H fair the first week of August. During the week I gave her electrolytes daily. I dont have the bottle here, but it's the kind you mix in water, 2 scoops for 5 gallons. As I've been doing on endurance rides, I mix 1/2 scoop with applesauce and give it to her with an electrolyte syringe. About 3 days into the week I noticed her butt looked sucked in. Just the anus, nothing else. Could the electrolytes have done this? I can't find anything in my vet book to explain it. The mare acted fine, never overheated, no high heart rate, no weird behavior. In fact she did VERY well for an endurance horse against all those moped out pleasure horses. But her rear still does not look quite right today. Oh, one other thing, on day 2 I gave the syringe to my husband, he didn't realize there was a cap on it and shot the electros and the cap down her. Vets - please tell me this will pass normally or could be the problem, I can't image it got all the way through her system in one day. And thank you to all who helped with suggestions for her costume, she got 7th place out of 100 horses!
