[RC] For the vets - too much mineral salt? - Kristi SchaafI had been adding Redmond salt to my horses' feed (a measly couple of ounces or so daily - nothing too scientific), but got paranoid that they weren't getting enough, so decided to feed it free choice. After they lapped up what remained of my bucket, I picked up some Purina 12:12 Mineral salt at the feed store. Well, if it's possible for horses to overdose on red mineral salt, mine will!! Between the three of them they're lapping up about 2 CUPS a day (this has been going on for several weeks now). They're Arab geldings, currently in light work (25 miles/week max) and it's been hot and humid here in Iowa lately. They also have access to loose white salt, but don't inhale that as quickly. I keep thinking that they'll soon replenish what they're lacking and slow down, but they haven't yet. Should I cut back on the 'free choice' or just let them keep inhaling as much as they want?
