Re: [RC] Anglo's and Part bred Arabs - Jon . Linderman

I went to an endurance seminar once for new riders and 3 of the top 10 most
important tips were to find a horse that seems to enjoy what he they are
doing w/a reminder that the horse did not ask to come to the ride. The
perfectly bred horse may not want to do this sport afterall. I have an
arab/saddlebred cross who was bred specifically & carefully to be a
3-gaited & fine harness champion like his famous 1/2 brother and even more
famous daddy, but he was a dud, or at least hated that type of work but
loves life on the trail. With about 500 miles under his girth he continues
to thrive w/each new challenge. He has drawn compliments for his bone,
ooohs and ahhs for his walk, envy at his trot outs, criticism for his long
back, and chuckles at his conformation. He has great speed and willingness
to always move forward, but pulses slower than the purebreds he rides with
, though that might have something to do w/the 235 pound of me and my gear.
But has taken to every challenge that I've slowly exposed him to & seems to
love each of them & I have learned alot along the way & have much to learn
this year and in the future. I would think w/a warmblood cross he might be
at least a bit big and heavy and retain heat, but ridden appropriately
might also be an enjoyable mount who can complete challenges presented to
him. If you are like me and only have 1 horse for endurance, you make the
most of what that horse can give you. I know my guy won't be an FEI or
PanAm caliber horse, and several people have made sure to let me know that!
But I enjoy him & he leads a good life on and off the trail. Learning what
he can do, as well as what he can't do will serve me well for my next horse
n the future.

Jon
