Re: [RC] Mounting on off side - Kristene SmutsWell if that side you have to get off on is on the downhill side, believe you me, that is not the time to be wishing you had taught this to your horse! >> I can't agree more. I thanked my foresight in this regard more than once. The last time was when I had torn the ligaments in my right ankle. We had a spook, I was still in the saddle but with no stirrups, then a stumble took care of that. I couldn't mount "normally" as I couldn't put weight on that foot, so I found an embankment and mounted on the "wrong" side, facing the wrong way so as not to twist the ankle. The same argument for ground tying or getting your horse to always go to your vehicle. My mom was with me once, she tripped, fell and broke the bones in her elbow. We were a distance from the vehicle and I sent Ibn off to wait for me while I attended to my mom. He went straight there and waited patiently. You never know when you might need those sessions of "un-normal" training!
