Lisa, I don't think people are condoning BEATING a horse. There is a HUGE difference between discipline and abuse. I think Liz sums it up nicely. My training philosophy is simply if you want to communicate to a horse, you've got to talk like a horse. In a herd situation, a horse will get a swift kick from a herd member as discipline for acting out of line. Horses understand the message with quick and somewhat painful responses for their actions. It is seen naturally in the wild herds and among stablemates. Just as I will bite a biting horse back or will knee a horse in the side if he crowds my space, I will give a sharp slap with my reins if the discipline is warrented. Horses do have personalities and are very loyal friends to us, but that does not mean we need to regard them as having human emotions and needs... if we did, we'd all have installed A/C and furnaces in the barns to accomodate their living environments as if it were our own homes (and we ALL know how horses will stand out in the rain/sleet/snow before making way to the shelter provided ... something humans will never understand!). Just another thought on the whole matter. Sarah Lansing, MI __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
