Re: [RC] making horses stand to get on - Barbara McCraryI just cheat and use a mounting block! Or a large rock, a berm, a log, the downhill side of the trail, or whatever else is handy. It's hard for me to mount up without some sort of cheating. Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jonni Jewell" <jonnij@xxxxxxxx> To: "Ridecamp" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 9:16 AM Subject: [RC] making horses stand to get on I spend a lot of time, teaching my guys to stand still when I get on, and to stay standing usually 15 seconds or so after I am on, before we head out. Being we have also done some NATRC, where the horse could lose points from moving, I started a habit, that I find very useful to keep the horse from taking that step to balance themselves as I get on, and to maybe make the horse prepare itself for my climbing, crawling, or struggling up on to him when I am having a "bad mount" day. Before I mount, I grab the stirrup, and pull it towards me, and tell the horse to "balance". They will usually then spread their feet somewhat, taking that step towards me. This give the horse a better balanced position as I get on. Kind of like a table with 4 legs close together tips over much easier than one where the legs are spread apart more. When I started doing this with my guys, they stopped taking those steps (which can lead to more steps, and walking off) as I actually got on.
