[RC] shelter walls - Barb ReidWe are in the process of replacing a lean-to shelter and I have a question of durabilty versus safety. The current shelter is metal piping with a tarp roof and has done a great job for the last 6 years. But we had a new horse in this last year and there were some disagreements about who deserved the favorite shelter and who should settle for the secondary shelter. The result is that a number of metal pipes have been bent beyond repair. They are 1.5 inch pipes, I don't think they're aluminum because I bought the heavy duty kit to withstand horse abuse. The easiest thing would be to replace those pipes with stronger pipes but I got to wondering just how much force it took to bend those pipes in the first place. There is also the option of replacing the pipes with 4x4's but I've had horses snap 4x4's in the past and they're much harder to repair since we sink them into the ground for strength. So if the horse is moving fast enough to bend my metal pipes or snap 4x4's...would he damage himself on a stronger pipe? I assume they do this damage by arguing about pecking order. Even after a year, number 2 & 3 horses still discusss this occassionally. There are plenty of shelters and plenty of feeders for all the horses but they all want to use the same one, sigh.
