[RC] electrolytes--trial and error - Linda DeweesI'm one of those 3 year newbies and the electrolyte question is always interesting to me. On the one and only LD I did a few years ago in the desert I didn't electrolyte since I didn't know anything about it. Some riders thought that was a bad idea, but the vet wasn't concerned at all about electrolyting for just a 30 mile ride in dry weather and we had no problems. I'm ready to try some LD's again this fall, but this time I think I'll ease into electrolyting. I run marathons once in a while and a few weeks ago I did a super hilly 50K in warm weather. It was the first time I had tried human electrolytes caps and I think they really helped me a lot, but I wasn't sure how much and how often I should take them. I asked the experts there and they said it's just trial and error, just like with our horses. hmmm. Popular food at the aid stations besides pretzels and chps were boiled potatoes and watermelon slices dipped in lots of salt. I saw one runner dump a handful of salt in his water bottle! Yuck! But I believe in elytes now if you're out sweating for a long time.Linda Dewees (whose wondering if her pony can handle the hills at Bear Valley Springs with not a lot of training, or should she wait till Coso Jam? Just do it, right?) _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= http://www.endurance.net/ads/seabiscuit.html Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
