[RC] Problem Child - Roger RittenhouseHI Tim ( list note- I get the archive so for me to respond I have to do lots of cut paste) Hey guy - boy real sorry to here your boy is down and out again, well it is sort of a thing with these guys - as in my post to come - Omni and I are out of things again for a period. Things just happen.. But I offer the opinion - I bet its another foot abscess- with all this wet mud we are having the soles are very soft - easy to get a stone gravel or what ever pressed into the sole. I ask how he stands on the hard surface - toe pointing on on the heel? Toe point - I have found that to be abscess, rocked back on the heel up higher.. may be wrong, how does he move in soft dirt vs the hard road. sore sole the sting of the road will make it worse. I still have a problem trying to guess stone bruise abscess vs suspension problems But they stand different.. no heat in the joints -- legs ? no reaction to flexion? right Do the hoof tester.. do the GOOD on first then the bad one, then back to the good one. Also look for a digital pulse just below the ankle.. if the foot is the problem it will be stronger on that one then the good one. Sometimes I though my guys would never get right and strong enough for a ride. Things do just happen.. but the wet soft pasture are causing problems for all. One other suggestion - clean off the sole - dry same and use a hoof hardener Kertex- Crossapol what ever - anything to toughen up the sole surface.. and dry it out.. I do Omni every day with Crossapol. ps I really dont like bute - it will cover up the problem and you may not find it .. I only use bute as the LAST resort.. I prefer them to be lame and NOT run around the place and cause more damage- but that is just me, I use other alternative 'softer' substances then bute. Roger R From: Timothy Worden <> Am I the only one with a problem child? just about ready to ride again. Now tonight he almost can't walk because his left front. Here's where I may need some input/suggestions/encouragement. Our first thought was one of shock and that he broke something. So I did my best to try and rule out that it's not a break. Here's his behavior. 1)Is able to put weight on his sore leg. 2)No swelling in his leg which makes me thinks it's higher, perhaps in his shoulder. 3)He willingly lets me bend, twist, and flex his leg. 4)Walks really gimpy, but does put weight on that leg. 5)Poked and prodded all over his shoulder and can't pinpoint a spot causing a serious reflex of pain. Could this be a bruised or out of place joint? Maybe a serious sprain? He's in a pasture with one other horse who would not kick him. We stalled him and buted him and we'll see how he is over the next couple days. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= http://www.endurance.net/ads/seabiscuit.html Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
