[RC] URGENT NOTICE ABOUT TRAIL FUNDING! - Hickory Ridge ArabiansSubject: URGENT NOTICE ABOUT TRAIL FUNDING!> I received this information and felt that it was just too important not to get it to everyone. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES CONCERNING TRAIL FUNDING! Jerry Fruth Chairman, AERC Trails Committee ACT NOW TO SAVE TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENTS FUNDING The Threat The House Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee voted to prohibit the use of federal funds for the enhancements program for the fiscal year that begins this October 1st. Killing enhancements is one of many regressive transportation spending decisions championed by the subcommittee chairman, Representative Istook of Oklahoma. Amtrak and public transit are also hurt, and the bill reflects an outdated "roads only" approach to transportation spending. Next Steps The House Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the subcommittee's outrageous recommendations on Monday afternoon, July 21st. The measure will go to the House itself shortly thereafter for debate and vote. The Issue Enhancements is by far the most popular federal transportation program - with citizens and local communities. Most state transportation agencies like it too because it facilitates a working relationship with communities and builds support for transportation programs among citizens. Since 1991, enhancements provided $6 billion for 16,699 projects that enhance community benefits of transportation investments - less than two cents of every federal transportation dollar. Nearly $3 billion of community investment went into the projects. Half of the twelve enhancement activities relate directly or indirectly to preservation of transportation-related historic and cultural resources, including historic bridges and roads, transportation, museums, visitor centers, rail depots and other historic transportation facilities, historic Main Street revitalizations, and the purchase of historic sites. Action Needed Tell your representatives that you are outraged by the proposed elimination of enhancements and urge them to oppose it and do all they can to make sure it is defeated. Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected to your representative's office. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= http://www.endurance.net/ads/seabiscuit.html Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
