[RC] [Guest] Time and affecting the horse - Ridecamp Guest

Erica DeVoti ponyexpress@xxxxxxxxxxxx

The common refrain here seems to be "relax" (or pretend to) and "visualize"
what you want from your horse. I believe there is quite alot of merit to
this and certainly many testimonials to support this concept. However, lest
someone feel they are lacking in this ability, it would be important to
remember that just plain ol' time has a huge impact and is often
underestimated in value--it may actually be what is needed most. Many times
we get our new horse (me included!) and we expect to be as comfortable on
him in a few months as we are on our older and trusted "other" horse whom
we've had "forever" (or at least longer than the new one!).We may have a bad
experience and it snowballs--we may think "this is not the right horse for
me!" In my experience, trust in eachother may take as much as a year or
more of consistent riding in different situations and with consistency of
communication. I feel it goes even further than "wet saddle
blankets"--just like your comfy old slippers, ones' horse needs good old
fashioned *time* to become familiar with you and to mold to your
expectations.

IMHO,
Erica DeVoti
