[RC] Older Riders - Susan JonesOne of the things that attracted me to endurance was the wide range of ages of the riders. An article in a horse magazine (don't remember which) featured a woman and the older half-arab she had raised rode in endurance. From the age of the horse, I guessed she must be at least as old as me and probably older. It helped me believe that I might be able to do it too. As far as age and riding, one of the people I admired was Bill Dorrance. He rode into his 90's. In order to mount and ride his horse, he built a platform with stairs. A pulley mounted overhead allowed him to saddle his own horse. Even though he needed a walker to get around on his own, he still rode. It's fun to read stories from Ridecamp from people who have very low AERC numbers as well as those who have yet to attend their first ride. Because of Ridecamp, I have volunteered at two rides. I wouldn't have known to do that if someone had not suggested it. They were great experiences. I'm glad there are LDs. It seems like something achievable. And I dream of 100s. When my horse and I are ready. Not before, and heaven forbid we miss the opportunity because we hold off too long. If I drag my feet, I hope someone will nudge me to move up.
