Another good strategy for tail-ending:

If you are riding with a friend who ALSO intends to go real slow, make sure you have consecutive rider numbers and that yours is higher than hers. Then, even if she should manage to get behind you at the finish line, the odds are when the timer says "numbers", she will write it down (ie) "53 and 54" no matter which order you actually crossed in--so be sure you are "54"
