Re: [RC] Coastal Hay - Beth GunnHeidi, Right! I wish they were big bales. Feedstore guy said they were 100#ers. Not true. 3 string and easy to move square bales. I live coastal SC and this hay is from NY, I was told. When can I expect a shipment? How is my credit?:)) Beth Gunn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heidi Smith" <heidi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Beth Gunn" <happyhoofprints@xxxxxxxxxxx>; <Cowgirgoof@xxxxxxx>; <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 10:27 AM Subject: Re: [RC] Coastal Hay I, too, have added grassy timothy and alfalfa(only a bit), to diet. Continue to feed 50% cb hay as well. The timothy is $35 a bale!!! Justtryto fill your barn with that!!Whether or not that is expensive depends on the size of the bale. I think our hay in this area is cheap--it's going for around $80 a ton. Last year it averaged $110 a ton, which is still pretty good. In many urban areas, you'll pay well over $200 a ton. The big bales that we free-feed average 1800 lbs apiece, so cost twice what your timothy bales cost--and I consider them to be a bargain at an average of $72 a bale. If your timothy bales average 900 lbs, I'd say they're a bargain. Now, if you're talking two-string bales that you can pick up and carry around, I'd agree they're exhorbitant. (And I want to know where you live, because I could hire a semi and haul grass hay to your area, and make out like a bandit, even on the other side of the country!) But without knowing their weight, one can't compare prices....
