Use a bowline knot. 3) Let rope hang straight. 4) Make a loop in rope and put over horse's nose. 5) Make a second looe with rope and put over horse's nose tucking this loop under the first loop twice. 6) Pull end of second loop up each side of face and over ears. (Slid it up so it goes on like a headstall.) 7) Continue to pull about another foot or two up. 8) Take this rope, twist once and tuck it under the rope around neck. 9) Pull loop forward on each side so it makes a browband. 10) Now take up any slack in rope at loose end of rope under chin. 11) Take rope under chin up tight and make a small loop and tuck under two nose loops under the chin area. 12) Drop end of rope through this little loop and tighten up. 13) A HALTER. I've used this on colts and had a couple try to get away but they can't. It fits like a halter. I use it to tie all my horses to trees when I'm having a lunch or just leading up or down hill, cross a stream, whatever. When done, I untie it and put back on saddle. Then I can use the same rope to open a wire gate or pull a big branch off trail. I've end cut a couple feet off end and given it to a hiker on trail who's backpack strap had broken. I use a rope halter on my horse when I stop but Imake itfrom the 1/4 cotton rope I have on my saddle. Then when I don'tneedit, take it off and its a 'rope' again and back on my saddle.
