In the scene where Gandalf calls him from the meadow I nearly jumped out of my seat and I was pinching my husbands arm. It was soooo beautiful! I loved the imagery in the first LOTR too with the high-speed chase of horse or non-horse creatures. Of course the battle with the wolverine-creatures (sorry, I'm not up to speed on the terminology cause it doesn't matter what they are called to me) was pretty sad with the death of so many pretty horses. :o( My daughter is a Tolkien fan and was apalled at the horses they used for both Shadowfax and the Riders of Rohan She looked up every reference to Shadowfax in the books and swears he was supposed to be gleaming silver in color (as all the Rohan horses), tall, and faster than can be. She said the Andalusian used was paddling so badly it could hardly run!!
