A properly fitted running martingale should have the rings approx. the height of the withers. The reins should be in a straight line from the bit to your hand. It is not a head setting device, merely a safeguard to keep from getting a black eye and a gentle reminder to the horse when excited and the head and neck goes up in the "unacceptable zone".
