Re: [RC] bitless bridle- late night musings about bridles and bits from a designer - Stephanie E Caldwell

The hackamore did not break the horses jaw.........the user did. ANY bit
or
hackamore is only as sever as the user!!!!!!!

Well.... There's some bits/hackamores that are more severe, to the point of
not being useable except in professional hands in extreme cases. I think
anything over reasonable length shanks, on trails I'm not comfortable with
much over 2", although my old curb was 4" grazing shanks. It's too easy to
balance on the reins, to get them caught, or for things to happen on the
trail.

The longest shanks/most severe bit I've ever had was a Frog bit. An old
cutting horse that I leased had one, but I had no idea how you would ride in
it. I always rode Maverick in a grazing bit. One day his owner brought the
Frog bit over and we took him out in the arena. The reins had little weights
on them and the bit was perfectly balanced in his mouth. Shanks were
probably around 8", but I didn't measure them, with between a 2 - 3" port.
All I had to do was move my hand a fraction of an inch and he would respond.
It was the absolute coolest thing in the world! But, I could never feel
comfortable trail riding him in a bit that could damage so much in an
accident!

Steph
