Re: [Guest] [RC] Lameness Problems, long - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMWhat is a PENS unit? Percutaneous electrical neural stimulation. A veterinary acupuncturist puts very thin acupuncture needles down into opposing ends of muscle groups that are sore, then attaches clips that provide a very mild electrical stimulus at varying intensity and frequency. The muscle contracts and relaxes and it provides very good relaxation and analgesia, and thus better healing. You can also run the current across sore joints, tendons and such (I use it for plantar fascitis on myself about twice a week). It's similar to a TENS unit (a rubber electrode that sticks on the skin) that some people use, the only difference is that because the PENS electrical stimulus travels down the needles and directly into the muscle or wherever, as opposed to having to cross the skin, the therapy is more precisely delivered and more effective. Plus, I can reach deeper muscle groups that TENS can't get close to. It's good stuff. The PT was sure it was in her back and pelvis area and so he concentrated on that. I never though to have him look at the Mustang. Might be something for him to look into. Back soreness can show up as peripheral lameness and vice versa. Good luck.
