[RC] Re:[RC] Riding an Arab... - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

For about a year, in my experience, a calm role model is really a Good Thing. After that, you still can have some goofs but they aren't as likely to be semi-serious. The more they see in the company of the calm role model, the better it is. I still like to have my 14 yr old mare with me if someone is riding the 9 yr old gelding because every so often Bunduq decides that he "doesn't do water in any form", including mud....and he's a real PIA. If any of the others go across, he'll follow 90% of the time. But I have had to jump Dory back and forth across an irrigation ditch about 5 times on occasion.

I have a young gelding I am starting this summer. So far I've been doing
ground work, but we're getting close to saddle work. I know this will be an
issue with him too. I do have an option for riding with an older, more
relaxed horse. I have also taken him for walks (leading him) on the same
routes that we will start riding when we get that far. So he will have seen
them, and maybe see fewer new things to be worried about. How long do you
ride with others before they get the picture and are more relaxed on their
own?
