[RC] re: [RC] Riding an Arab... - Trail Pal

Hi Melanie -

The best thing I have found is to keep 'em busy. It's hard for horses
(or humans) to think about 2 things at the same time :-)

Try having her do some of the exercises you are doing in your dressage
lessons - serpentines, shoulder-ins, whatever gets her to focus on YOU.

Do something you know she knows how to do - it gives you a chance to
praise her when she succeeds. I've been known to turn my horse around
and have him back down the trail - I still get to continue down the
trail, and he doesn't have to see the worrisome thing. After awhile,
he figured out that he had to work twice as hard, so he moderated his
reactions - still noticing everything, just not getting worked up.

Have fun

[RC] Riding an Arab... - Sundaez

She's going on the trail pretty well now and i'm taking
dressage lessons that are tremendously helping my balance on her.

She does something on the trail that I don't know quite what to do. She

notices everything...and I mean everything! She gets anxious if she
sees something very far away... Really seems to trouble her more than
anything close up. She stops in her tracks, goes real high headed, eyes
get huge. If you push her forward she goes but gets more and more upset
and sometimes tries to leave.

What do you guys do in this situation? Let them stand and watch...ride
them forward? I'm really building her confidence in me and don't want
to ruin it...

Melanie
