Re: [RC] McClellan saddles in endurance? - Glenda R. Snodgrasstack repairman suggested to my husband that we get a McClellan saddle as a "back up" saddle because the army had to use them on so many different horses. I understand that the calvarymen would change horses every three months or so, but had to keep the same saddle. I rode a McClellan-style saddle when I first started riding and loved it, so I did quite a bit of research on them when I bought an Arab and started endurance. What I learned is that real, old, McClellan saddles vary widely because they were made by so many different people over such a long period of time. Within the variations, however, they tend to be universally too narrow for an Arab. (I rode one on a very narrow Paso Fino and it worked fine for her.) If you could try these saddles out before buying, you might get lucky and find a wide one, but I would say the chances aren't very good. The Stonewall saddles are built very much in the McClellan style and I really liked riding in a Stonewall. Used Stonewalls are pretty easy to find, so you might look around for one of those instead. -- Glenda R. Snodgrass Before you begin, consider ...
