[RC] [Guest] Pit crews at NC - Ridecamp ModeratorSharon Westergard goripper@xxxxxxxxxxIn response to Maggie's inquiry about pit crews, there weren't places to meet riders on the first two loops that the 100s did. By the time we were going out for the third and final loop, with dehydrated horses, the ride management was very receptive to our crews meeting us, and this loop allowed just that. But like I say, the first two loops didn't afford such luxury. Besides, many riders that started didn't have crews. The maps that we were given made it look like there was plenty of water on the trail. Unfortunately, the water may have been there but was either not accessible, not drinkable (dead critters in it) or in a swamp where the horses were sucking more mud than water. We also encountered quite a few dry tanks. The outcome most likely would have been much different (less pulls, faster times)with more water on all the loops. The temperature hovered around 100. The course is beautiful, but demanding and technical in places. Keep in mind in Oct. it will be getting darker earlier, so the going may be slower after dark. They do have a nice loop to finish up on for night riding, however. It is much flatter (one climb in the beginning, which is a repeat from the second loop) and wide, sandy roads. Sharon Westergard
