RE: [RC] 2001 Dodge problem - Levon YengoyanI change my fuel filter at every oil change. It may be a bit excessive, but it's cheap insurance for what could potentially lead to a very expensive problem. The VP44 lift pump on that model Ram is a well known weak link. The fuel that runs through functions to cool and lubricate it. If no, or limited, fuel gets to it (i.e. clogged fuel filter), you can ruin the pump. I think they are around $1500 or so. Definitely replace the fuel filter or check the fuel pressure. There is a valve right on the pump for checking pressure. The fuel filter change is easy (5 mins max), just make sure to prime the system before starting. Fuel filter first. In the 2001 they need changing at a much greater interval than the older Cummins, 15,000 miles. If that isn't done, it can take out the fuel pump (and of course the injector pump too). Another thought is the Throttle Position Sensor, which determines computer-controlled shifting for 3rd gear and over. Steven ----- Original Message ----- From: Marlene Moss To: Ridecamp Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 9:52 PM Subject: [RC] 2001 Dodge problem Hi, We’ve got a 2001 Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel.?It has recently developed this bucking behavior that seems to vary with the temp of the truck, temp outside, rpms and who knows what else. It feels like a lack of fuel.?It is worse on acceleration over 2000 rpm, uphill, with a load. ?Some history on the truck – it has been run out of fuel once, but all the injectors seem to be working fine.?It also has an exhaust brake installed.?But the problem didn’t occur specifically around either of those events, but definitely after the fuel problem. There has been no check engine light and Dodge says they can’t do anything unless there are codes to diagnose. I thought I remembered a problem like this discussed a long while back, but don’t think there was a solution.?Thought I remembered comments that Dodge claimed the exhaust brake voided the warranty which shouldn’t be the case. Any ideas? Thanks, Marlene =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
