[RC] Tevis 2003 Coverage - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullAck. I'm just coming up for air to let people know about the coverage we're doing this year for Tevis. Main Tevis page: http://www.foothill.net/tevis/ Photos: As usual, I'm going to be up on the top of the mountain above Squaw Valley, watching the riders crossing into Desolation Wilderness and will hopefully get photos of everyone there. Quite when I'll get the chance to upload them, I have no idea, but I'll do my best to get them up there sometime Saturday. When they arrive, they'll be at: http://tevis2003.quacky.co.uk/ I'll also have some pics from Robie from Friday. There probably won't be anything before 11 am *at the earliest* though. Database Event Coverage: This year we are using the spiffy database system we've used for several years for the Western States 100 Mile Run to track the event. For the last few years for Tevis, all you've had was me typing numbers into the computer and uploading them to the web - very slow and I'm a lousy copy-typist, so it hasn't been great, but at least was something. So, this year we've got radio people and laptop operators and runners and all sorts of people scuttling around the trail, getting rider numbers from the timers at most checkpoints to the database. If all goes well, we should get a pretty good view of "what's going on": http://www.foothill.net/tevis/webcast/ You'll notice on that page that not only will you get full field results for each checkpoint, you will also be able to type a rider number into the box "Where's my rider?" and you will get a full picture of where that rider has been and when. If you get what seems to be a really weird list of times/ checkpoints, try it again - every so often, if you check it the *second* we are uploading new information, it burps and pulls in other people's results. Of course, you'll need to check the start list to figure out what your rider's number is. Because of the remote, rough terrain and radio variabilities, we can't always guarantee we'll get good contact, so I should warn you now that we have some reservations about how well the radio coverage will work. If it works, it'll be great. If the chain breaks, then we might be limited to yours truly scrabbling from checkpoint to checkpoint, trying to scrounge the results. This might mean hiking/biking/driving/standing around with a cell phone waiting for horses to go past at 3 am, etc. So we'll do our best and please be patient. Enjoy! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Lucy Chaplin Trumbull elsie AT foothill DOT net Repotted english person in Sierra Foothills, California * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
