The only time I can't get a reading is when it is really cloudy, like right before a storm. If you hit a patch of poor reception it will read "weak signal" but as soon as it is clear it will resume. You don't lose any mileage. Riding in the woods has not been a problem.

These watches are based on GPS movement and if you ride in forested areas, you can't get a reading on the GPS, correct?

I purchased the 100 lap model online 3 months ago for about $130 w/free shipping and no tax added-much less than the $200 Sports Authority wanted. I absolutely love it! The only thing better would for it to add equine heart monitor capabilities!
