Re: [RC] [RC] [Guest] Tripping and epm - Ridecamp ModeratorLaurie Durgin <ladurgin@xxxxxxx> EPM may also have a link to armadilo now they think.(And raccoon, skunks and domestic cats may also be a link inthe circle). It then is less likely, but if the horse came from an area that had oppussums , he may have been exposed . It can lay dormat; they think until some stress overrides the immune system and then it 'gets in'.Also there have been outbreaks in some barns wh re they think possibly, there could even be a link to the processing of the feed.Only heat processeed feed can rule it out. Also the hay if imported from an another area is a possible source of cantaimination. They estimate 50-60% of all the horses in this country are exposed and as much as 90% in some areas (like here the SE).They say it can live in the ground for maybe a year. . . However it is less prevalent in Mountainous, dry climate.(like the Rockies). I told you I now have "EPM induced Paranoia". If my vet hadn't been here and seen him stumble, and I'd waited around I might have had a grade 4 or 5 horse trying to just stand, instead of a grade 1 or 2. And I believe it is Univ. of Mo. just got a grant to study if there aren't 'different strains' of EPM that damage specific areas,(symptoms) as the symptoms can vary.(stumbling, stifle problems, hock problems, circling, inablility to swallow, personality changes, ataxia , but sometimes on both sides). I am going back to my padded cell now to await the results fromt he spinal tap.
