Re: [RC] Remote dog collar - Jackie WinklemanA girl I new in college did a research project on using shock collars. It has been a few years, but here's what I remember from her project. She used a grey arab that cribbed. She hid in the top of the barn. She used peep holes to see out of. Everyday when the horse was brought into the barn, a shock collar was placed on the horse. She observed for the entire time the horse was in the stall. When the horse would begin to crib, she would press the shock button. Eventually he quit cribbing while he was in the stall WITH the shock collar on. As long as that collar was on him, he would not crib. She also observed that when he went into the stall and NO shock collar was put on him, he did go back to cribbing. He knew when it was there and when it wasn't. Some of those horses are just too smart! I thought that was an interesting research project though. The girl had to get bored though - just sitting there for hours watching a horse standing in a stall hours a day - for weeks! This is just what I remember from years ago - so it is very possible that I have forgotten some of the control factors... When she came back we did not see her chasing the horses so we thought it worked--- that is, until we came home one morning from brunch and spotted her chasing the babies. She had learned it only works when she can see us (and vice versa). We found her a good home and my husband mourned--- she was a great dog but the risk was too great. If you condition a puppy early, it could work but we went through three Aussie's/Border Collies before we gave up--- my husband loved the breed--- so smart---- TOOO smart!!! I can't help but wonder if Arabians, being so smart, could figure out the "out of sight--- out of danger" principle, too ;-) Bette Sullivan wrote:I got one originally becuase my ACD would chase and nip the horses.(She was a rescue at year old, so missed some critical training andsocializing months).
