Is the problem truely with the mare?? When
the dominant horse is starting to become upset, the other horse is supposed to
move off. If this does not happen either because of very close quarters,
or a non dominant horse that doesn't know what he is supposed to do, the
dominant horse is going to get enraged and really lay into the
other.
I had a boarder 25 years ago that had been alone
all of her life. She did not understand horse language. Almost
everyday she would approach where my gelding (the most benevolent herd boss
around) was. He would warn her off. She would unconcernedly continue
towards the hay or whatever. Eventually he would kick her. She would
look at him with a "what was that for?". A while later this would go on
again. She never did learn. I was real glad when she was sold.
