[RC] dog problems - Barb Reid

Some advice that I was given years ago, is to turn and
chase the dog. Very few dogs are crazy and stupid enough
to stand their ground when something the size of a horse
'fights' back. Simply chase him until he backs off 10-15
feet, then turn and proceed on your ride. At first, you
may have to repeat this a few times until the dog
understands that he really is going to lose this one. Many
dogs get used to the idea that by charging and barking they
can make the horse go away and eventually it turns into a
habit (like chasing cars). This also works well for horses
that are afraid of barking dogs because they learn that the
dog is actually afraid of them. The only downside I've
ever heard, is that an occassional horse starts to enjoy
chasing the dogs :)
