Re: [RC] ground control shoes questions - Maggie MieskeExcuse me. Please take note. Correction to Nelson's methods of nailing on the GC shoes: We use FIVE nails...one at the toe and two on each side (specifically the 3rd and 5th holes from the toe). We do NOT put them towards the rear. We have a very specific method of using these shoes. We do use the premarked nail holes but we rarely if ever need to reclinch. If the nails are coming through, perhaps you need to use a different nail with a different head. Nelson uses Mustad #5 combo and have reset GCs using the SAME nail holes without a problem. We have gotten several resets (I think up to 3) out of these shoes and have put as much as 200 miles of hard competition PLUS conditioning on GRAVEL and dirt roads on them and they still looked good. Please be careful citing other people's methods to others as your assessment of our methods is totally wrong. We have sent VERY specific instructions to people and have posted them on RC and nowhere EVER have we mentioned using 8 nails. Nelson never uses 8 nails and 9 times out of ten only uses 4 regardless of the type of shoe. Occasionally he needs to use 6 for a specific problem. I would suggest that you try a different nail or a #8 washer (we have never had to do this though). If someone wishes to have the specific instructions posted again, we will be happy to do this again and in fact, perhaps Steph would agree to post them permanently in the articles section. I just bought another box of them. The last box of 12 lasted me two years but we didn't do much riding last year either. This year I've got two horses competing and they are both doing well in them. I too have only asphalt with a small gravel shoulder at home to ride on locally, so much concussion is a problem here. I know people whose horses will not tolerate the flex this shoe has. One of my friends had her horse's hoof wall start to crumble after a week and had to pull them. The hoof has to be fairly hard and tough to use these shoes. After using these shoes for 2 years and losing quite a few of them in the pasture I've learned a bit along with my farrier. 1-We don't use the pre stamped holes to drive nails through anymore. The amount of flex in the shoes pulls the nails though from the bottom. 2-Every week or so you need to tighten the clinches, so you need to invest in a good clincher. 3- my farrier still only puts 6 nails in each shoe, but Maggie Mieske who also uses these shoes uses 8..can't quite convince him to do this yet. Another thing Maggie does that my farrier will not is put nails further back near the heels. Beacuse they move so well, this isn't a problem with hoof expansion. I love these shoes and they are great on all surfaces especially rocks and asphalt. Depending on the terrain, we'll easily get at least 1 reset. The more road riding we have to do, the quicker the wear. The rear wers mor than the fronts usually do to the sliding action of the trot. That's my 2cents. I really recommend you only buy one set and try them and if they work for your horse, order the box full at $7/shoe. I ordered the clear this time round so we can see the white line. (Actually an LD horse right now.) I ride on alot of gravel roads, about 1/2 the training rides. Anything in particular my farrier should know? Time for resets? She has never used these before. I would like to have her try them, but want to know what I'm getting into before I start a "new" thing. Thanks in advance to any/all answers. ===== Heidi-aerc#M20935 /\_/\~ http://www.synjinarts.com ~~/~~ \\~~~~ (Wildlife/Western & Equine / O> ) \~~~~~ Art) / __/ \~~~~~~ (_@_/ | \~~~~ | \~~~~~~ | \~~~~ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
