Re: [RC] Stupid Question - Yearling and Bug Spray - sharp pennyNow...if I *only* had a round pen! You don't need a round pen. Just use a rope halter with knots on the nose and a 12' leadline. Use your spray bottle with water and start spraying the air next to the horse. If he tries to leave town keep his head and eyes facing you and go with him continueing to spray. He can't out run you and get away if he is facing you with two eyes. When he tries to turn his head away from you get it back on you with short hard bumps. This is why I like the rope halter with knots on the nose piece, it gets their attention quicker than a flat web type halter and they won't lean on it the way they tend to do with web halters. It won't take long before he realizes that running is just too much work and the only way to make the spraying stop is by standing still. It's VERY important that you don't stop spraying until two things happen; one his feet are still and two he relaxes. It helps if it is a hot day, the mist of water will feel good to him. :) Then when he is comfortable with spraying the air work on spraying his body starting with his side, then his neck, legs and lastly his face.
