[RC] Stallions - June Scheunemann & Mike Bernsdorf

I had a bad experience with a stallion actually mounting my mare while I was
going down the trail....I was riding with a friend and both our mares were
in heat ...We stopped several times and asked her to pass us. She didn't
until we went up a hill and her guy got out of control and flew right up
behind my mare and I went off. She got control but, not after I went off
and the mare got loose. Luckily my friend got Alia just yards away ...at
that point we both told her (after she asked if she caused that problem) to
get out of site (and not very nicely either our trail manners were gone at
this point).

Since then, I now ride a stallion and am always on guard with him. Tyler is
a very well behaved boy but, those hormones are always there. I was
acutally shamed for tapping his equipment when he dropped and wasn't paying
attention. Yep, someone said that was pretty mean...well, in a way yes but,
in a way NO!! He was not paying attention to me or the chain I was using so
gee after the tap...I got his full attention and he remained a good boy the
rest of the weekend. Now, here I was making my boy behave and got called on
the carpet for it. Now, I've also ridden down the trails with mares for 50
miles and with geldings and Tyler has remained controlled...however, I
always feel it is my responsibility to be on guard. I always tie to the
trailer 2 halters and 2 separate leads.

I do agree that no matter what any and all horses should have
manners....mares, geldings, stallions, ponies and mules!! They all should
not display dangerous behavior. I choose to ride Tyler so I do feel I need
to be on guard. I also feel that others should be aware of their animals
behavior too.

from the soggy midwest!!!
