Cindy IMO, it would depend on how much you're planning on feeding. If the feed in question is one of the 'high fat' mixes that provides maybe 8-10% fat, you're really not feeding that much actual fat, so no big deal at a ride----better to feed a bit of fat than to make any major feed changes at the ride. Ultimate Finish is 25% fat and I would prefer discontinuing it at a ride, assuming you're feeding other forages and some carbohydrate source. However, a lot of horses really like the rice bran type mixes and so using a bit as a top dressing to encourage eating is fine. Use your own judgement and just try not to go overboard with it. Skip the flax seed during the ride unless the horse considers it enough of a treat to count as a top dressing as well.
