Re: [RC] [RC] ex-EPM purchase? - Laurie Durgin

After 3 weeks of research, ya know how much of an 'expert" I am.1) He was treated for epm.Was he tested?, Seems to be some horses are treated for symptoms and sometimes the vets are wrong and it its other things. I got a lot of flack from some for not testing. BUT, after looking at what else it co
uld be and the symptoms so classice I am 98% sure Rascal has it.
2) If it was only January, I am surprised the horse is completely recovered. In my Research , the ones who recover70% partially, 40% completely, continue for a year or more.
3)Which drug was used to treat? Some evidence th old drugs(sulfa/pyrith.)combo just weaken the protozoa till the immune system can kill them off"hence you may get relapse(20-25% )if and when the horse gets stressed.(although I was told by some sources that it stops their abliity the reproduce. The newer drug "Marquis" by bayer is suppose to kill them outright.
4)They often treat for 90 days OR MORE, like 6 months on the old drugs.
5)May need to keep his immune system up, some evidence EPM horses may have a weak immune system(course I haven't figured out how to tell, RAscal was never sick or "puny".)And or there May be an Ulcer connection.
Final thoughts: I'd want to know these questions. He could be completely recovered. Though the time frame seems short. It would be a risk.If he really had it. If he was really cheap and you don't get too attached and gave him Vit. E etc. and talk to his vet. . . But anyone who has had this in their horse can tell you it is "Painful" to go thru. Hey guys,

Just called about a horse for a friend who needs a gentle possible 25
mile horse. He's supposedly in excellent health, been carrying a 215 lb.
man who was a beginner (the girlfriend rode). Went on and on about how it
runs loops around the field with the other horses chasing it until
they're all fagged and his tail is up and he's trotting big like it's
fun. Lots of description of what a wonderful horse he is, then said he'd
been treated for EPM around the first of the year. I'm not horribly
interested, but curious. The guy's pretty honest because he didn't have
to mention that, and some people would have tossed the horse's papers
that made him 20 and dropped him back to "15". Just curious as to what
ya'll thought.
