Re: [RC] grain at rides - suendavidsome of my ctr friends insist that they have to feed their grain at 3 am, for a 7 am start, because they are afraid of inducing colic. anything to that? ed There's something to the concept of not feeding grain for four hours before the start, and I suppose you could reeeealllly stretch it to include colic. It's more likely just to affect plasma glucose, insulin and plasma volumes for a transient amount of time, and it's nice not to have that added to the existing issues right at the start. So the generally accepted rule of thumb is no grain less than four hours before the start, but that doesn't mean the horse HAS to get his grain at four hours and one minute before. The night before is more than enough to process the grain into cellular glycogen. Or the day before. Or, not at all, just lots of forage. And, plenty of people *do* still feed grain before the start and do just fine. Not my personal suggestion, but hey, horses rarely read the textbooks. :-) Susan G =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
