Michael Foss, DVM gave a nice speech at our
convention and said one thing that stuck in my mind. If you want your horse to
drink and won't, feed him some hay/forage because it will stimulate his thirst
within 20-30 minutes and then he will be very thirsty. He was right--it does
work.

really don't care much what he eats during a ride as long as he eats. First
priortiy is drinking - he doesn't drink, he doesn't go on.
