Re: [RC] Fw: Slowing down speedy horse (Easy Early to Win Later) - Truman PrevattI suspect Bob is right on target. I had an old mare I rode some and then my wife rode her for awhile. She didn't start endurance till she was 15 and had an old injury she aggrivated at 18. She was fast and she loved to run - probably how she got the old injury (had it when we got her). In fact we got her because no one else wanted to deal with her. With Stormy, the more you tried to hold her back the faster she went. It more than likely was the simple fact that by trying to hold her back, your weight was drawn forward and that's a que to go faster - at least to her. I found that by simply sitting up tall and dropping the contact she would slow down. Yes it seems counter intutative but it worked like a charm with her. Drop the reins she would slow, try to hold her back she would speed up. Horses, don't you love 'em? I know that one of my problems is that I transmit my nervousness and excitement to the horse as I'm not the most mellow fellow and so am always trying to calm myself down and use quite images. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
