Because I like to not have to think about what I'm doing
at a ride too much (hahaha!), I prepackage our "grain". I buy ziplocs, the
quart size and the gallon size. The gallon size will usually hold equal
amounts of beet pulp and grain (measure wise)... which is probably 2 # of our
mix (corn, oats, oat pellets, alfalfa pellets, beet pulp...) plus maybe a pound
of beet pulp....I haven't measure the two together but it's an almost big scoop
of grain plus a full scoop of beet pulp which just fits in the bag. This
is their "regular" meal. I usually keep 4-6 of those handy for after the
ride and the next day. I use the quart size bags and use a smaller grey
scoop I have which probably holds 1/2# of grain. These bags hold 2 scoops
of grain and 1 of beet pulp plus a scoop of probiotic and a scoop of
electrolytes. These are the meals they get in the hours preceding the ride
and during the ride. I try to have plenty of those. At the longer
hold, he may eat two of those. Last year I also added some wet hay cubes
which they seemed to like. I think I will do that again. However, as
I said before, I was so concerned at our first one hundred, I wonder if I
overfed the day before??? I took more of the "big" bags and used them
all. I think I will keep a better handle on that in coming rides and see
what happens.
