Re: [RC] re: LD - Howard Bramhall

The difference being a horse has to be in pretty good shape to race a 50
but, you can get away with a horse that isn't in the best shape and run a
fast 25. As far as the speed, MPH, both events seem to come out the same
down here in the fast flatland rides of the South.

There was this one gal at Liberty last week-end who had been running fast
25's on a horse that appeared to be in decent shape. She did her first 50
at Liberty and seemed to be having some problems. She slowed down, but, the
change in distance was taking its toll on both her and the horse. The
difference between the two distances is great and, to say that a 25 is a
training ride for a 50 is not really a valid statement. It isn't. They are
two completely different sports.

LD riders make most rides possible, financially speaking, and are the reason
a Ride Manager in the Southeast will turn in a profit. At some rides down
here the LD riders are double the number of endurance riders, and, if not
for the LDers, we would not have the money to have more vets, better awards,
Nancy Gooch, etc. Like the volunteers, we need to thank each and every one
of those LD riders for attending. It's the only way to be.

cya,
Howard

Subject: [RC] re: LD

What is it about LD rides that make 'racing' more of a problem
than 'real' endurance rides? Is it the fact that they attract
more novices, or is there something inherent in the distance
itself - does the shorter distance make it possible to
'override' a horse, but the problems don't appear at the vet
checks? Do longer offer more time for 'over riding' to become
apparent and get caught at the vet checks?

If racing LDs is ineveitable, is there any way LDs COULD be made
'safe to race', by having more vets checks or different vetting
criteria?

Just curious.
