Re: [RC] Susan G ?? Oil vs. dry fat - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMBut some folks are telling me that I'm setting him up for >cardiovascular problems because the dry fat is >hydrogenated. Is this really an issue? Cindy No, it's not. The issue of cardiovascular disease in humans has more to do with trans fatty acids and saturation, along with a variety of poor life style choices and the fact that humans live a whole lot longer than the average horse does. So when you feed vegetable fat from any source, saturation and hydrogenation isn't an issue, but oxidation and rancidity is. I'm not familiar with the procesing of the veggie-based dry fat, but any polyunsaturated fat source can still become rancid over time. My suggestion would be to keep it in a cool, dark place as much as possible and supplement with some extra vitamin e. Some regular time spent grazing is also good, too---tons and tons of great antioxidents in there for free (well, if you don't count the cost of having to get the pasture in the first place...<g>) Susan G =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
